2022 Mid-terms
What are Midterms? The midterm elections, or Midterms, are elections held during the second year of a President’s four-year period in office. “The midterm elections change the makeup of Congress, and significantly impact how the current president will be able to govern in the second half of their term,” according to RocktheVote.org.
The midterms don’t garner a lot of attention. Infact, according to RocktheVote.org, “young voters are particularly likely to vote in presidential years but not turn out for midterm elections.” However, in recent years, there has been a surge of political involvement from America’s youth. Young people broke records in 2018, more than doubling the youth turnout from the 2014 midterms!
The makeup of Congress is expected to change this year. According to Economists.com, “The Democrats face strong headwinds in trying to keep control of the Senate. The president’s party typically loses seats in midterm elections.” Republicans are expected to gain control of both the House and Senate. This potentially creates conflict for Biden and the laws he hopes to continue pushing through Congress.
The American public is hurting with the rise of inflation around the country. Democrats and Republicans are both making efforts to reduce rising prices at the gas pump and in stores. According to a CNBC All-America Economic survey, “42% of Americans believe the Republican Party would do a better job at bringing down inflation, while only 27% think that Democrats are the best party to confront the issue.”
Especially after the Supreme court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, abortion remains one of America’s most politically talked about subjects. According to a poll done by Pewresearch.org, “A majority of registered voters (56%) say the issue of abortion will be very important in their midterm vote, up from 43% in March.”
It’s critical that voters go to the polls and cast their ballots. President Biden says that the 2022 MidTerm elections will be “one of the most important elections in our lifetime.”
