The Woodgrove golf team wrapped up their season with a strong finish, celebrating their achievements and growth throughout the year. The Woodgrove golf team had a regular season finishing at four and seven with a second place finish at the Jefferson Invitational. The team also had an individual champion at the Jefferson Invitational, Vincent Diglio.
After the regular season, only six golfers get to go into the offseason and compete for Woodgrove High School. However, the team consists of 12 golfers, leading six golfers to the end of their season. Josh Hickman, a senior and a golfer for the Woodgrove team, mentioned, “Practice changed during the end of the season, becoming a battle for the top six spot to remain on the team come districts.” With the end of season right around the corner, golfers knew that if they were not playing great, they could be cut from the tournament squad and be done with their season. This puts the golfer in a state of mind to always be on their game and try to minimize any mistakes. Hickman commented, “I went to the district tournament to help support the remaining players in their round.” Knowing that one of their former players is there to help cheer them on, helped boost the golfers confidence.
Senior golfer Vincent Diglio spoke on the work ethic of the golf team while preparing for the postseason, saying, “We practice on the Regional tournament course before the tournament to gain a sense of familiarity and an upper hand on the other teams.” This strategy gives the golfers a first glance at the course before they have to play in the tournament play which gives them a huge advantage over teams who see it for the first time at the region tournament. This also helps the team feel more comfortable and less stressed on the course come tournament day.
Woodgrove golf concluded their season on a hopeful note, as Vincent Diglio was awarded All-State. They hope to carry their momentum into next season and make a run for the state tournament.
