Looking for a brand new Sportsplex to play sports at? Woodgrove Spanish teacher Seán Cogolludo and his wife Claudia Rivera have come to the rescue. The Purcellville Sportsplex was opened on November 11 across from Southern States in Purcellville. Cogolludo saw this space as an opportunity to create a much-needed sense of community in the Purcellville area. He also loves to have his own space in order to coach, as coaching soccer is one of the most important parts of Cogolludo’s life.
One of the many reasons he started this Sportsplex was activity. Cogolludo expressed, “I am a very active person; with reffing, coaching and just being an active dad, I hate bunkering down in the winter. When I saw this opportunity with the space and amenities I wanted, and it had the possibility to expand, I was very interested in starting the first Purcellville Sportsplex.” Upon launching this project, there have been many people reaching out to use this amazing space. For personal trainers, sports coaches, and recreational sports, this space is applicable for many different types of training.
While opening the Sportsplex, many options came into place, but Cogolludo and his wife decided to focus on three things: basketball, volleyball, and pickleball. There is plenty of availability when trying to get into this space. “We have a discount for all student admissions which is five dollars, while regular admission is 10 dollars. There are also court rentals available for 100 an hour and pickup games that we host,” stated Cogolludo. All of the information can be seen on their website: www.purcellvillesportsplex.com. This is not only an amazing opportunity for students to build community around each other, but also a great way to stay active during the cold months of the winter.
Upon opening this Sportsplex, there has been a great interest by the student body, not only at Woodgrove but at high schools and middle schools around the community. One of Cogolludo’s goals when opening this Sportsplex was to bring different ages and different schools together. One group of students who attend the Sportsplex are middle school basketball players. One of them is Johnny Merlo, a current eighth grader at Blue Ridge Middle School. Merlo expressed, “My favorite part of the Sportsplex is the indoor basketball court. I like that it’s full court, and the reason I go here is because it is local and is very warm in the winter.”
Cogolludo is not only loving the startup of the Sportsplex, but is very involved in continually growing the Sportsplex over the years. “Starting January, we will have our brand new entrance with a brand new Purcellville Sportsplex sign. There will be a smaller room that I am going to turn into a performance training center with a turf ground and weights. That room will be changed when students and trainers give their advice, so that we can better it for everyone. On top of that, there is another room that I don’t have an exact idea on, but I am looking to maybe put a half court for basketball and maybe another full size pickleball court,” stated Cogolludo. No matter what kind of athlete you are, this Sportsplex will have somewhere for you to train or have fun with the community.
