The theatre department of Woodgrove High School in Purcellville, VA, has started rehearsals for their spring musical, “Mamma Mia!” The school will be competing with the show against 44 other schools in the National Capital Area (NCA) Cappies, a program for theatre and journalism students in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia in which actors, crew members, student critics, and the shows themselves strive to win awards for outstanding work. The 2024-2025 school year marks Woodgrove’s debut in the NCA Cappies.
“Mamma Mia!” follows a daughter’s journey to discover her father’s identity on the eve of her wedding. Set in a Greek island paradise to a feel-good soundtrack by ABBA, this story of love, laughter, and friendship should not be missed.
Woodgrove’s show is directed by theatre teacher Mrs. Beverly Pruzina, with junior Sophie Brzozowsky serving as the music director and senior Caty Jewell as the show’s choreographer. With 43 crew members, 42 cast members, and a talented student leadership team, “Mamma Mia!” is poised to be one of Woodgrove’s largest and most successful productions yet.
“I’m most excited to take on some of ABBA’s most famous songs, like ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Mamma Mia!’” shared Brzozowsky. “I know that our cast will do a spectacular job vocally, and our choreographer Caty Jewell is going to elevate the songs to a whole new level.”
Pruzina is thrilled to be putting the story on stage. She explained, “There are just so many things to be very excited about…As the acting coach, I love the moments where students start to tell the story, and it becomes their story, and they make that connection.” Above all, Pruzina looks forward to the community seeing the show. “The most exciting part of any production is when the community comes to see the show, and there is nothing like a full house!” she exclaimed.
Wear your sparkles and bring your friends and family to shows from March 26 to 29. The theatre department would love to see a packed house at 2 p.m. on March 29 to support the cast for their NCA Cappies performance. Tickets are available online at The Grove Theatre’s website, woodgrovetheatre.com.
