When it comes to coffee and donuts, the first two chains that might come to mind are Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. These two chains have competed for the top spot since the 1990s, and the Northern Virginia area is another battleground for customers. Every morning, Woodgrove students must make a choice between the two giants.
Founded in 1971, Starbucks is the largest specialty coffee chain in the U.S.. Their business does not stop in America with 26 percent of their sales are from global stores, with over 30,000 locations worldwide. Starbucks, with a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere, is a destination for people to work, study, or catch up with friends. Known for their high quality fast food style beverages, they focus on coffee and tea drinks.
Founded 20 years before Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts made their debut selling coffee, pastries, and sandwiches. With bright colors and a catchy motto, Dunkin offers more affordable food and drink options. They have 10,000 less locations worldwide than Starbucks, but a more diverse menu.
Located 0.4 miles away from each other, Purcellville gives students the toughest decision: Starbucks or Dunkin? In a recent Woodgrove Outlander poll, Dunkin came out as the winner with 57.1% of the votes, compared to Starbucks only getting 42.9% of the votes.
Woodgrove sophomore Nathan Barona, who gives Dunkin his vote, states, “I’ve been a big fan of Dunkin for quite a bit now when it comes to breakfast in the morning before school.” On the opposing side, sophomore Walker Kennedy prefers Starbucks. “In my honest opinion, I feel like Starbucks is better because the service is better and faster,” Kennedy states. Though students remain divided on whether Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts reigns supreme, there are significant arguments on both sides.
