Ovechkin Nets 888, Washington the First Team to Hit 100 Points, Clinches Playoff Spot

Alex Ovechkin got the scoring started in the Nation’s Capital on March 20, 2025, leading to the Capitals 3-2 decision over Philadelphia.

For Ovechkin, it’s goal number 888, putting him just 7 shy of Wayne Gretsky for the all-time lead in NHL goals.

For the Capitals, it’s point number 100 on the 2025 campaign. Thursday’s win made Washington the first team to punch their ticket to the postseason, the opposite of a calendar year ago when the Caps were the final team to sneak into the playoffs.

With Ovechkin on the verge of history, the buzz around the Caps has never been higher. Washington continues to rank among the top teams in the league for attendance and home crowd. Head Coach Spencer Carbery was asked postgame about the effect the Great Chase has had on the team. “Our guys feed off it on the bench, they’re pulling for him. I think it energizes them to play at a higher level. There’s no question as a coach I feel like this chase and the energy around it hasn’t been a distraction or a hindrance to our group. It’s been a massive benefit.”
