President Zelensky: From Comedian to Ukrainian President at War
In light of the current state of Eastern Europe, the story of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is a tremendous tale that is sure to be honored for years to come.
Volodymyr Zelensky was born January 25th, 1978 in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine. He was raised partly in Ukraine as well as in Erdenet, Mongolia, where he spent four years before returning to his former home in Kryvyi and began his education. He graduated from Kryvyi Rih Economic institute in 2000 with a law degree. While in school, Zelensky practiced theater, a talent he pursued instead of utilizing his law degree.
Zelensky’s comedy career started with his involvement in the Klub Vesyólykh i Nakhódchivykh (The Club of Funny and Inventive People), which is a competition broadcasted by the Commonwealth of Independent States. Zelensky was a talented comedian and actor, yet show business led him, quite ironically, into politics after his stint as a president fighting against corruption on his comedy show “Servant Of The People.”
Zelensky’s first formal jab at politics came on New Year’s Eve in 2018 when he announced his candidacy for President of Ukraine. As a fresh face to the world of politics Zelensky found himself gaining attention due to his well known performances. His history on television served him well, winning him his first election in a landslide victory against Petro Poroshenko; Zelensky earned 73 percent of the vote. “President Zelensky’s path from comedian to president has helped his cause. Through being a comedian he has gained many loyal friends. People have come to know who he is and what kind of person he has become,” states Mrs. Butler, a counseling administrative assistant at Woodgrove High School and head of the fundraiser to help Ukrainian refugees.
While his overwhelming victory in the election shocked many, his lack of experience in politics was still a looming and undeniable presence. His bravery in serving on the front lines in Russia’s invasion of his country has sparked courage in the hearts of his people. “President Zelensky’s decision to serve his country in combat is truly amazing! He is the only president to face a full-fledged invasion. I know that his people totally respect him for what he is trying to do for them. It is a blessing to have such a great leader to stand up for his country. Not only are Ukrainians willing to fight for their country, but others all over the world are going to Ukraine to join the fight. What a great example he is setting for the entire world,” stated Mrs. Butler.
