When you think of legendary girls basketball programs in NOVA, three schools are at the top of the list. Robinson Secondary School, James Madison High School and Oakton High School. These three schools have all produced programs that will be talked about for years to come. Founded between 1959 and 1971, the schools have become the forefront of NOVA girls basketball history, continuing to make new records up to the 2022-2023 season. However, all of these schools have been dethroned by the Woodgrove Varsity Girls Basketball team this season. The most recent victory was against four-time division 6A state winner, James Madison High School.
Led by senior captains Angelina Nice, Sadie Shores and Tabitha Miller, the Wolverines secured two scrimmage wins against Oakton and Robinson, and a 30 point win in the season opener against James Madison. The December 1st victory was the first defeat for James Madison against a public school by over 20 points in nearly five years. The leading scorer for the Wolverines was senior Sadie Shores, with an astounding 27 points.
The Girls Varsity Basketball team now holds a 2-0 record as the Warhawks Opening Tournament comes to a close. Their second victory comes from the defeat of Hayfield Secondary School. The Wolverines chase their next victory against Dillard High School (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) on December 8th at The St. James in Springfield, VA.
