Last year the Woodgrove Varsity Girls Basketball team took off with a record of 22-4 going all the way to win the district championship and making their way to the regionals. With the senior, junior, and sophomore girls soaring past games with many wins the team looked phenomenal.

Going into this season, Woodgrove has a returning player, Sadie Shores, back on the team. Two years ago she was one of the Wolverine’s star players before transferring to Paul VI Catholic School for her junior year. This year she is back at Woodgrove, ready to help push the team into a better season. With the 2023-2024 basketball season there are many expectations for this Girls Varsity Team this season.

Returning senior guard, Hope Thurman comments,“This year we have Sadie Shores and four great new members of the team. Our goal this season is to help connect with each other and hope those bonds can help us be better than last year.”

Last year there were astonishing seniors and now that those seniors are gone, this year there are many new talented players on the team. The squad now has three freshmen who could fill the gaps left by the class of 2023. All the returning players are back to bring grit and grind to mentor the new players. The six seniors that we have this year will be crucial to the team. They will be the captains for the group.

“We rely on those six seniors we still have on the team because they have been through the journey. They have the experience to lead us in tough moments. With the new freshmen and sophomores they have gotten a lot of experience playing in the off-season with the older players. The younger girls are starting to know what their job is to support the older players so that the team is greater. The whole team has been doing very well with everything during the preseason.” Coach Derek Fisher comments on what the younger and older players have in store for the Wolverines.

With being a part of a team, there are many strengths a team can have. Their strengths last year was their ability to transition down the floor, shoot threes, and play unselfish basketball.

Coach Fisher shares what the teams strengths and goals are for this year, “Our team this year is looking like a really good offensive group. This season we are focusing on getting up and down the floor, scoring a lot of points, and mainly being able to shoot a lot of open three pointers. That’s our main goal, to be a greater offensive team.”

Going into this season the team seems very competitive, confident, and hungry to bring Woodgrove back a new trophy into the trophy case. This team has a bright future ahead of them. The only thing that the team needs now is for everyone to come and support every game that these girls will play so they can win with the crowd behind their back.
