The Lady Wolverines Varsity Basketball team is traveling to Virginia Commonwealth University for the VHSL Class 4 State Championship for the second time in three years. The team will face off against Hampton High School on Friday March 8th. In their last state appearance, in the 2021-2022 season, they fell to Menchville High School. They are going into the state championship with a 28-1 record, with their only loss being to Desert Vista (Arizona).
The team is led by senior captains Sadie Shores, Angelina Nice and Tabitha Miller. The three captains started the season on the starting lineup, as well as sophomore Lyla Brown and junior Valerie Blankenship. However, after Miller’s season ending injury in December against Loudoun Valley, freshman Amaya Ramey filled the open starting spot. As a team, the Lady Wolverines won their district (Catoctin) and region (4C) championships, placing them in the top of the bracket for their class. The team was ranked 3rd in the state for the regular season, including all private and public schools. Individual players have also received accolades for their performance this season. Shores and Nice have each reached 1,000 high school career points in the 2023-2024 season. All the starting players have been named members of the Catoctin all-district teams. Nice was also named District and Region Player of the Year.
Woodgrove will have an adapted bell schedule on March 8th, to give students an opportunity to cheer on their classmates.
