Imagine a world where students not only excel in their studies, but also become mentors and role models for their peers. This is the transformative power of student tutoring, where learning becomes a shared journey for all and everyone has the chance to shine in their own unique way.
Tutoring is a personalized educational support system designed to help students improve their understanding of various subjects. It consists of one on one or small group instruction, focusing on the individual needs and learning the pace of each student. Tutors offer guidance, clarify concepts, and provide practice to reinforce learning. Whether students are tutoring for volunteering purposes or not, their willingness to help others shows their high quality of selflessness. Sophomore Honor Watson, a tutor at Round Hill Elementary, shared how she found her love for tutoring. “I have always known that I loved to help people. For club involvement, I am a part of the Student Leaders club here at Woodgrove. Student Leaders ended up starting a whole program and whoever was interested became a tutor at Round Hill elementary,” shared Watson.
Being involved in clubs that facilitate tutoring skills is a great way to put yourself out there. Although taking that initiative can be intimidating, the experience is worthwhile. Watson said, “For students looking to become a tutor, always be yourself and take advantage of the great opportunities. I would talk to adults and friends to see if they have any recommendations. For club purposes, join Student Leaders if you are interested in becoming a tutor. Something I have learned throughout all of this is that it might be awkward at first, but just be you and good things will come from that.”
Tutoring students helps prepare for the future by offering personalized support to be equipped for future challenges that may arise. Addison Brannen, a senior who also tutors at Round Hill Elementary, has noticed how tutoring students has helped her prepare for the future. “The kids give me such a different perspective on how they learn, and especially nowadays they learn things so differently from how I learned growing up. I even learn some stuff from them. For future purposes and after college, I plan to go into a field with children. All of this helps me grow my understanding about how they learn,” Brannen said.
Throughout all of this, making a lasting impact on those students you have helped is rewarding. Tutoring can have a profound and lasting impact on a student’s life. It boosts academic performance, builds confidence and fosters a love for learning. The support and guidance from a tutor can help prepare students to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals for years to come. Watson voiced, “Tutoring kids has been the most fulfilling thing in the world. This whole experience has helped me feel more comfortable talking to others, specifically high school students and also knowing that they are enjoying being there and are gaining something. It is just a beautiful thing to be able to help people.”
