Woodgrove High School has an extraordinary number of successful women’s sports programs. These teams are full of determined athletes that have many admirable traits and go the extra mile to show what The Grove is all about.

Although outnumbered, the women on the Cross Country, Winter Track, and Spring Track teams exhibit high skill and dedication. Brienza Marraccini, an athlete on all three teams, says that running with the school is physically challenging, yet rewarding. “It’s a hard sport. A lot of people try out, but then they quit because they don’t like the very vigorous [practice], or maybe the coaching, or maybe the dominant male atmosphere. I will say that on the female side of the track you’re very bonded to your friends.” She says she feels empowered by her “big sisters” and feels an overall sense of accomplishment after running.

Our female athletes’ skill and talent continues into the winter sports. The Women’s Basketball Program at Woodgrove has shown great comradery, not only within each team, but between freshman, junior varsity, and varsity. The unified efforts of every player has created an upstanding program. There is a lot of healthy competition between each team, as well as encouragement between players. This teamwork has created a strong and unwavering program here at Woodgrove.

The gymnastics team at Woodgrove is another very successful program. The girls went undefeated during their regular 2022-2023 season, as well as winning first place at regionals. At the VHSL State Championship, they placed second with a total team score of 141.85. Senior Rylee Evans describes the experience with the coaching staff,¨She’s never put any pressure on us to win. She wants us to do our best and have fun.” The team, as well as the coach, are very uplifting, and the girls are excited for the new season.

The Softball team is a consistently dominant spring sport at Woodgrove. This past season, the Varsity team achieved the title of Class 5 State Champions, as well as being ranked first in the state. They scored an overall 257 runs and won 19 games straight to end the season. Their talents can be seen as many return or have continued playing at college level. The Woodgrove Women Athletes represent their school exceptionally with their continued success and resilience.
