The annual Woodgrove vs. Loudoun Valley basketball double header had a new addition this year. A Unified Basketball game took place during the halftime of the Boys Varsity game on December 20th. The game featured Unified Sports teams from both Woodgrove and Loudoun Valley.
The athletes who participated in the Unified Basketball game were students from Loudoun Valley High School and Woodgrove High School. Most of the Woodgrove team is a part of the Unified Physical Education class. The Unified PE class is new this year and Woodgrove is one of the few schools in the county to offer this class. The class is taught by Mr. Jason Toton and is only open to juniors and seniors. The class is designed for special education students to build new relationships with their peers while playing athletic activities.
An average class period consists of a warm up, which is usually a walk outside or laps around the gym. The warm up is followed by stations that focus on their bi-weekly sport units. The members of the class also participate in outside of school activities throughout the year. There is a soccer event in the fall, basketball in the winter, track and field events in the spring. The class is part of a national project aimed at connecting students with and without disabilities to come together and participate in physical activity.
